Sommelier's Notes

Château Mouton Rothschild is one of Bordeaux's legendary First Growth estates, situated in Pauillac on the Left Bank of the Gironde.

Its gravel-rich vineyards are particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape that defines the château's distinctive style through structure, aromatic depth and long ageing potential.

The estate has been owned by the Rothschild family since 1853 and became a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification in 1973, the only château to have been elevated to First Growth status after the original classification.

Mouton Rothschild is also celebrated for its annual artist-designed labels, which unite fine wine with contemporary art.

It's wines typically combine concentrated blackcurrant fruit with cedar, tobacco, graphite and finely integrated oak, balancing Pauillac's powerful Cabernet character with polish and aromatic complexity.

The 2014 vintage offers a more classical and measured interpretation of Mouton Rothschild than the richer, more opulent years.

Cabernet Sauvignon makes up 81% of the blend, lending cassis, graphite and structure, while Merlot adds roundness and Cabernet Franc contributes aromatic detail.

The wine's dark fruit is complemented by cedar, subtle spice and floral notes, with polished yet persistent tannins and a long, savoury finish.

Its appeal lies in precision and balance rather than overwhelming weight, making it an attractive choice for collectors who enjoy refined, Cabernet-led Bordeaux.

Bordeaux's 2014 season began with a relatively warm, sunny spring, followed by a variable summer and a cooler, less sunny August.

The defining feature was an unusually long, warm and dry late-season period extending from the end of August into October.

These conditions allowed the grapes to reach good maturity while retaining freshness, and the extended harvest gave the estate time to pick parcels at their optimum ripeness.

At Mouton Rothschild, the result was a structured yet poised wine, with expressive fruit, lively acidity and fine tannins. It is a vintage that rewards those seeking classical Pauillac character and a wine capable of evolving gracefully in bottle.
